One of my absolute favourite items to make with hexagons and English Paper Piecing are Hexie Hearts. I started creating these sweet hearts when I first fell in love with Quarter Inch Hexagons. Once I started making hearts, I couldn’t stop. They are so sweet and ditsy and bring so much joy to any room. I have experimented with all sizes of hexagons and the heart shapes that can be made from them.
When I first started making hexie hearts I framed them in a simple embroidery hoop, but since then I have thought of many different ideas for what to do with them. I have made mini pennants, decorated bags and notions pouches, and I have ideas of appliqueing them to clothes too. I have also started to experiment with embellishment over my hexie hearts, such as embroidering flowers on them, Sashiko stitching, and Kantha quilting.
If you would like to make your own sweet Hexie Heart, I have created the Hexie Heart pattern collection. In this PDF pattern, you will find graphs and instructions on how to piece together a Hexie Heart using English Paper Piecing. There are a total of eleven heart charts using a variety of hexagon sizes.
The pattern booklet includes basic information about English Paper Piecing, as well as step by step photo guide to basting hexagons and ideas for applique and embellishment of your Hexie Heart. There is also a step by step photo guide on how to frame your Hexie Hearts in a timber embroidery hoop.
